Season of giving strikes the Irish

Orlando Sentinel - - SPORT THURSDAY - By Matt Murschel

With Santa and Mrs. Claus by his side, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly spread some holiday cheer of his own when he awarded walk-ons Mick Assaf and Colin Grunhard scholarships Wednesday morning at the team hotel.

Kelly called the pair forward in front of the team to present them with wrapped gifts. They opened them to reveal a card that read scholarship. Teammates rushed forward to celebrate with Assaf, a backup running back, and Grunhard, a backup center.

The emotional celebration was captured on video and shared on the football team’s social media accounts.

“Two guys that have worked really hard in our program,” Kelly said Wednesday ahead of Camping World Bowl practice in Orlando. “We have a period here where we have a couple of scholarships for the semester, so we were able to provide some aide for the rest of the academic year.”
