Mont­gomery in al­co­hol re­hab

For­mer Stars coach Jim Mont­gomery said Fri­day his abrupt dis­missal by the NHL club was “ap­pro­pri­ate” and he has en­tered al­co­hol re­hab.

Mont­gomery’s state­ment was his first pub­lic com­ment since he was fired Dec. 10 in his sec­ond sea­son for un­spec­i­fied un­pro­fes­sional con­duct. He said the fir­ing was “a wake-up call.”

“It was also the ap­pro­pri­ate call,” Mont­gomery, 50, said.

Sabres’ Olof­s­son out: Sabres for­ward and the the league’s rookie scor­ing leader Vic­tor Olof­s­son will miss be­tween five and six weeks with a lower-body in­jury.

Olof­s­son, 24, leads league rook­ies and ranks sec­ond among Sabres play­ers with 16 goals and 35 points in 42 games.

One-timers: RW Ilya Ko­valchuk, 36, will play for the Cana­di­ens the rest of the sea­son af­ter sign­ing a two-way con­tract for the league min­i­mum . ... Is­lan­ders D Adam Pelech will miss the rest of the reg­u­lar sea­son af­ter suf­fer­ing an Achilles ten­don in­jury . ... The league sus­pended Stars RW Corey Perry five games for an el­bow to the head of the Preda­tors’ Ryan El­lis on Wed­nes­day . ... The league sus­pended Kings D Kur­tis MacDer­mid two games for an il­le­gal check to the head of the Fly­ers’ Ivan Provorov on Tues­day. ... The Bru­ins’ Bruce Cas­sidy, Blues’ Craig Berube, Cap­i­tals’ Todd Reirden and Golden Knights’ Ger­ard Gal­lant will be coaches at NHL All-Star Week­end later this month in St. Louis.
