Dash captain Ohai goes to Red Stars
was drafted by the Red Stars in 2016 and made 88 appearances during her four seasons with the club. Naughton was the Red Stars’ 2018 Defender of the Year.
“We are delighted to add Katie to the squad,” Dash coach James Clarkson said in a statement issued by the club. “She brings a lot of quality and playoff experience. She will strengthen the team and help us continue to improve.”
The Red Stars also traded the sixth overall College Draft pick to the North Carolina Courage for the 18th overall pick, which eventually went to the Dash.
The Courage now have the sixth, 27th, 28th, and 36th overall picks in the 2020 draft, which will be held in Baltimore, Md., on Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. Eastern time.
North Carolina selected four players in the 2019 NWSL Draft, but none of them had a large impact on the club’s on-field success this past season.
First-round pick Leah Pruitt played the most, featuring in 14 contests and tallying two goals and an assist. Lauren Milliet played in two games, while Hailey Harbison and Kaycie Tillman did not feature for the club.
Pruitt and Harbison both suffered injuries that limited their play. Pruitt, Harbison and Milliet are expected to be back with the Courage in 2020, while Tillman is now with the Washington Spirit.
The Courage won their second straight NWSL Championship in 2019, beating the Red Stars 4-0 in the final.
After the trade, the Red Stars now have the fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth, 26th and 35th picks in the NWSL Draft.
Houston Dash forward Kealia Ohai has been traded to the Chicago Red Stars.
