Ge­or­gia QB Jake Fromm is head­ing to the NFL, de­spite some strug­gles dur­ing a ju­nior sea­son that led to spec­u­la­tion he might re­turn for one more year. He an­nounced his de­ci­sion Wednesday. Fromm threw for a ca­reer-high 2,860 yards this sea­son, with 24 TDs and just five INTs. But he posted the low­est com­ple­tion per­cent­age (60.8) and QB rat­ing (141.2) of his college ca­reer, lead­ing to him drop­ping in many NFL draft pro­jec­tions.

Still, Fromm will be re­mem­bered as one of the best QBs in Ge­or­gia his­tory.

■ San Diego State coach Rocky Long will re­tire af­ter tak­ing the Aztecs to bowl games in each of his nine sea­sons. Long, who turns 70 later this month, was 81-38. He will be re­placed by Brady Hoke, who pre­ceded Long as the team’s head coach be­fore leav­ing for Michi­gan be­fore the 2011 sea­son. Hoke, 61, re­turned to San Diego State this sea­son to serve on Long’s staff . ... For­mer Michi­gan State coach Ge­orge Per­les died Tues­day. He was 85.

Base­ball: The Ma­jor League Base­ball sched­ule was re­leased and the sea­son will be­gin March 20, the ear­li­est open­ing day other than in­ter­na­tional games . ... The

Brew­ers gave man­ager Craig Coun­sell a three-year ex­ten­sion through the 2023 sea­son. Coun­sell, 49, a na­tive of Mil­wau­kee who played five sea­sons with the team and now is the long­est-tenured man­ager in the NL, is 405-381 with the Brew­ers. He led the team to con­sec­u­tive play­off ap­pear­ances the last two sea­sons.

Soc­cer: Real Madrid beat Va­len­cia 3-1 in Jed­dah, Saudi Ara­bia to ad­vance to Sunday’s fi­nal of the Span­ish Su­per Cup. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid face off Thursday in the other semi­fi­nal . ... Le­ices­ter sal­vaged a 1-1 draw with vis­it­ing As­ton Villa in the first leg of the clubs’ English League Cup semi­fi­nal. The sec­ond leg is Jan. 28. Manch­ester City beat host Manch­ester United 3-1 on Tues­day in the first leg of the other semi­fi­nal.

Ten­nis: Roberto Bautista Agut beat Go Soeda of Ja­pan 6-2, 6-4 to lift Davis Cup champ Spain into the quar­ter­fi­nals of the ATP Cup in Perth, Aus­tralia. Spain will face Bel­gium. The other quar­ter­fi­nal matchups are: Aus­tralia vs. Britain, Ar­gentina vs. Russia and Ser­bia vs. Canada.
