Ac­cord­ing to the Vir­ginia-based Men­tal Health Amer­ica, nearly one in five Amer­i­cans (or about 44 mil­lion peo­ple) deal with men­tal ill­ness, and more than 10 mil­lion adults have se­ri­ously con­sid­ered suicide. Men­tal-health sta­tis­tics for youth are equally dis­turb­ing. Cas­sidy hid his demons well. He al­ways brought a friendly face and en­cour­ag­ing de­meanor to work­outs. He came armed with a good sense of hu­mor too, which he showed early on to his novice run­ners — most with Type A per­son­al­i­ties — by telling them, “Just so you know, you’re not go­ing to win.”
