Construction worker detained after fatal stabbing at work site
Orange County sheriff ’s deputies have captured a construction worker who they say fled a work site after a deadly fight with his employer along Florida’s Turnpike on Monday morning.
The Sheriff ’s Office in a tweet on Monday night said Mason Toney, 28, was taken into custody “without incident.”
He is being detained in connection with the murder of William Steven
Knight, 28, who was fatally stabbed about 10:45 a.m., deputies alleged in an email to reporters.
The investigation led deputies to close the busy toll road at exit 254, which is near the Beachline Expressway (State Road 528) and Orange Blossom Trail.
Traffic backed up and caused long delays on southbound lanes through the noon hour while detectives investigated the killing.
Before capturing Toney, deputies had warned the public to be wary, urging anyone who sees Toney to call law enforcement.
At a press conference earlier Monday, sheriff’s spokesman, Christian Marrero, said detectives didn’t know what the fight was about.
Deputies responded to a 911 call at the exit Monday
morning and discovered Knight with “obvious trauma,” according to an email from the Sheriff’s Office. Knight was pronounced dead at the site by Orange County Fire Rescue.
“At this time, we don’t have much information, and are working to get some details for release,” deputies said in the email to reporters.
