Buyers announced for some Lucky’s Market stores

- By Austin Fuller

The Lucky’s Market stores in Orlando’s Colonial Landing shopping center and on Regency Village Drive are being acquired by supermarket chain Aldi.

Six stores are being acquired by Aldi as Lucky’s closes most of its locations and seeks Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Lucky’s released a list of the stores included in the agreement with Aldi on Wednesday.

The two Orlando area stores opened last year and are at 11601 Regency Village Drive and 3230 East Colonial Drive, across from Orlando Fashion Square mall.

Known for its affordability, Aldi has also reached an agreement for Lucky’s stores in

Coral Springs, Oakland Park, Sarasota and Venice. Publix confirmed Tuesday it had a contract to buy five Lucky’s leases, including the South Orange Avenue store in Orlando and locations in Clermont and Ormond Beach.

The fates of the Lucky’s at 11750 E. Colonial Drive in Orlando as well as the stores in Winter Park and Hunter’s Creek remain unclear, but the grocery store chain said it is continuing to have discussions with other potential buyers.

Lucky’s has said it will not be opening any more stores, but has not announced any plans for the sites of planned stores in Lake Mary and Apopka.

The grocery store chain also announced Wednesday it reached an agreement with a group led by its founders, Bo and Trish Sharon, to acquire the seven stores it was leaving open. Those stores are located across the country, including at 3170 West New Haven Ave., Melbourne.

“While this is a difficult situation across our company, we remain passionate and optimistic that we can continue to offer our communities access to healthful foods in this smaller footprint, preserving hundreds of jobs,” Bo Sharon said in a news release.

The seven stores being acquired by Lucky’s founders employ about 600 people, according to the news release.

The agreements are subject to court approval and an overbidding process, Lucky’s said.
