Here are tips and tidbits pet owners should know

- By Kathleen Christiansen

As the coronavirus spreads, more people are finding themselves quarantined at home — many with pets. For those working remotely, it can be difficult to accomplish tasks while furry, feathered or scaly companions beg for attention. Plus, many owners are fearful of passing COVID-19 on to their pets and are wondering how to prepare at this time.

Here are a few tidbits and tips from Central Florida pet experts and pet health supplement company RestoraPet.

For those worried about catching the coronavirus from their pet or vice versa, there’s some good news.

Veterinarian Dr. Jason Palm, owner of Hiawassee Veterinary Clinic in Orlando, said there is no evidence of COVID-19 passing from a human to a pet. In addition, according to information on the Florida Veterinary Medical Association’s website, there have been no reports of pets or livestock becoming ill or spreading the coronavirus in the U.S. and there is no evidence that a dog, cat or any pet can transmit COVID-19 to humans.

Candyce Hatch, volunteer manager at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, echoed that sentiment, but urges everyone to be prepared.

“Make sure you have someone lined up in case you have to be hospitalized,” she said. “You should also keep the dog separate from you if you are symptomatic. It’s very unlikely, but the germs could become a fomite and stay on the dog or cat’s fur and spread to anyone else that pets them.”

Hatch also said it would be a good idea to stock up on food, treats, toys and medications for pets.
