When will the senseless violence end?

-

Dexter Rentz Jr.'s death is sad and disturbing and confusing in so many ways.

Just weeks away from heading off to college to play football at the University of Louisville, he was gunned down in the prime of his life.

This was a kid who was friends with everyone. Dex was a nearly straight-A student. He was relatively small at 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, so he always felt he had to work harder than bigger players. He also always wanted to get noticed.

His murder isn’t the headline most people figured they would be reading about Dex.

Ocoee coach Aaron Sheppard was hit hard by the news.

“I really …. Ahh, man, I don’t know. There are all kinds of emotions. You treat these kids like they’re your own,” Sheppard said Friday, six days after this senseless act of violence. “Dex was like my child. I spent a lot of time with him. Something like this really hurts me because it’s like losing my own kid.
