Avery is the choice as Orange emergency manager

Becomes the first woman to hold role

- By Stephen Hudak

Lauraleigh Avery, Orange County’s new emergency manager — and the first woman to hold the job, credits her mom for her career success.

“My mom was my strong role model,” Avery said.

Her mother, Marguerite Rapp, was a single mom who worked 32 years for the city of Maitland, serving as executive assistant to six fire chiefs.

“I grew up in the Maitland Fire Department. They were all my dads,” Avery said of the chiefs. “They really were —anything we needed, they were there for us.”

Avery, 54, was officially named the new emergency manager during today’s County Commission meeting, which will be conducted through a videoconference.
