Weighing risks, benefits of returning to school

-

It has been reported that 20 percent of our K-12 teachers and 25 percent of our school administrators are over age 55. How safe will it be for them next school year? Many will be a few years from retirement. Is it worth the risk to work another year? Would you?

Health-wise, whatever is going on at home, a student will bring to the classroom. Orange County’s school district is the fourth-largest in the state with more than 212,000 students.

Students have the right to attend a public school, but they don’t have the right to infect others. Ditto for employees. It’s paramount that every student and school employee be tested before school starts and throughout the school year.

However, remote learning is a stopgap. Students need to be back in school.
