Cops: Man suspected in killings fled to Orlando
The man suspected in the killings of two women in Tallahassee — activist Oluwatoyin Salau and community volunteer Victoria Sims — fled to Orlando on a bus before being apprehended, police said Tuesday.
In a lengthy statement, the Tallahassee Police Department confirmed new details about the case, including that Sims’ home had been found “ransacked” after family members reported her missing.
However, the agency did not reveal what led its officers to a home on Monday Road, about four miles southeast of the State Capitol, where the bodies of both women were found. It also didn’t say if a motive or method for the killings had been identified.
The suspected killer, Aaron Glee Jr., is being held without bail in the Orange County Jail on warrants out of Leon County, for one count each of felony murder and kidnapping. He was booked by the Orlando Police Department about 5 a.m. Sunday, records show.
According to TPD, Salau first contacted the agency June 6, to report that she had been sexually battered the night before. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Salau tweeted she had been sexually assaulted by a man offering her a ride to a church where she was temporarily staying.
As officers began to investigate, her family reported the 19-year-old missing.
According to TPD, efforts to
find her “intensified” and investigators reached out to associates and victim advocate groups, while also checking places she had frequented. The agency also circulated a missing-person flier.
During the search, Sims’ family also called to report her missing. Police went to her home, finding it had been burglarized. Her vehicle was also gone.
Officers found the two women’s bodies at a home on Monday Road. The agency’s statement, which was unsigned, said only that “[i]nformation obtained” during the probe led police to the home. It did not indicate how the women were killed or the condition of their bodies.
The statement described Glee as “[t]he resident of” the home where the bodies were found. However, arrest paperwork from his booking in Orlando listed a West Palm Beach address for him.
According to TPD, the agency asked OPD to take Glee into custody and sent investigators to Orlando. Based on “evidence recovered at the scene and information gleaned in Orlando,” Glee was arrested, TPD said. The agency added that it does not appear the sexual battery Salau reported was related to her killing, as the description she gave doesn’t match Glee.
