■ Another record increase in COVID-19 cases.

Florida reported an additional 3,822 coronaviru­s cases Friday, yet another record-shattering increase as the number of infections statewide approaches 90,000.

There have now been 89,748 cases and 3,104 deaths statewide, which includes an additional 43 fatalities reported Friday compared with a day earlier.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office has been attributin­g the recent daily spikes in cases to expanded testing. On Friday, another 21,561

tests were logged for a total of over 1.5 million statewide since the pandemic began. The daily positive rate was 17.7%, the highest in a month, as the average positive rate for the year rose to 5.9%.

Four of the newly reported deaths were in Central Florida, including two in Volusia County and one each in Osceola and Polk. This brings the region’s death toll to 267.

Central Florida now has 10,979 cases, an increase of 877 from a day earlier. There are 374 new cases in Orange County for a total of 4,274; 154 in Polk for 1,856; 60 in Volusia for 1,117; 125 in Seminole for 1,101; 34 in Osceola for 960; 60 in Brevard for 748; 63 in Lake for 646; and 7 in Sumter for 277.

South Florida, home to 29% of Florida’s population, remains the hardest-hit region, accounting for 50% of cases with 44,940 total. That includes 1,121 new cases reported Friday among MiamiDade (24,376), Broward (10,448), and Palm Beach (10,116) counties. South Florida also has the most deaths at 1,695, 55% of the state’s fatalities, and includes 21 new deaths reported Friday.

To date, the state has recorded 12,774 hospitaliz­ations on its COVID-19 dashboard, including 197 new hospitaliz­ations reported Friday.

Nationwide, there are over 2.1 million cases with over 118,000 deaths. Worldwide, there are over 8.5 million cases, which is more than 1 in 1,000 people on the entire planet, and over 454,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronaviru­s Resource Center.
