Free movie series celebrates multicultural voices in film
Amazon Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society are launching a free nationwide movie series called “A Night at the Drive-In.” The event features films celebrating multicultural voices in cinema, and one of the participating venues is the Ocala Drive-In.
“With this drive-in summer series, I hope that friends and families are able to not only enjoy, but to learn and grow,” said Jordan, principal of Outlier Society, in a press release. “Now more than ever, amplifying Black and Brown stories means engaging culture to speak to hearts and minds about the world we live in. As we use this opportunity to reimagine community and proximity, I am excited that these films will be shared and celebrated all across the country.”
Amazon Studios will host double-features curated by Jordan with help from his marketing arm 8788 and Outlier Society every other week from July 1-Aug. 26.
“When Michael and our friends at Outlier proposed this idea, we instantly agreed there was no better time to celebrate these inspired films featuring diverse stories while bringing communities together to share in the experience,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, in a press release.
The featured movies will focus on a theme each week.
■ Movies to make you fall in love (July 1): “Love & Basketball” and “Crazy Rich Asians”
■ Movies that make you proud (July 15): “Black Panther” and “Creed”
■ Movies to inspire your inner child (July 29): “Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” and “Hook”
■ Movies to make you open your eyes (Aug. 12): “Do The Right Thing” and “Get Out”
■ Movies to make you laugh (Aug. 26): “Coming to America” and “Girls Trip”
As part of the concessions for the screenings, attendees will receive refreshments provided by Black-owned businesses Path Water, Pipcorn Popcorn and Partake Cookies.
