Actors union accuses Walt Disney World of rescinding work recall
Unit representing performers says park is retaliating after request for testing
Disney Equity performers who star in the theme parks shows remain furloughed indefinitely while Walt Disney World reopens and the rest of its unionized workforce returns to their jobs.
The Actors’ Equity Association has filed a grievance against Disney, accusing the company of retaliating against its members after the union argued that its performers should be regularly tested for COVID-19 because it’s difficult to wear masks and socially distance on stage.
“Since our public request that Disney test performers in the park, there have been more than 114,000 new coronavirus cases in
Florida,” said Mary McColl, executive director of Actors’ Equity Association, in a statement. “Rather than agree to testing of performers, Disney has decided to retaliate against workers fighting for a safe workplace during this pandemic.”
Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler responded in a statement, “We are exercising our right to open without Equity performers.”
She added that “seven unions signed agreements to have their employees return to work, the Actors’ Equity rejected our safety protocols and have not made themselves available to continue negotiations, which is unfortunate.”
At Disney, the union represents 750 members who perform at Disney including the Indiana Jones Stunt Show Spectacular, a staple at Hollywood Studios since the park opened in
