Valencia College gets $100K from Metallica for jobs training

Heavy metal legend Metallica has awarded $100,000 to Valencia College to help Central Floridians build job skills like manning heavy constructi­on equipment and welding.

Valencia is one of five colleges nationwide selected this year to receive grants through the Metallica Scholars initiative, started in 2018 to support career and technical education at community colleges. Polk State College, based in Winter Haven, was also selected this year.

At Valencia, the award will fund scholarshi­ps to roughly 25 residents of Orange and Osceola counties and provide them with short-term training in constructi­on trade.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative is intended primarily for people who are unemployed,
