Clark receives qualifying offer; no deal for Iwundu

The Orlando Magic took some small steps Thursday toward roster clarity for the 2020-21 season by extending a qualifying offer to forward Gary Clark.

The team, however, will not extend a qualifying offer to thirdyear forward Wes Iwundu, and also will decline its team option for shooting guard Melvin Frazier Jr., according to a league source.

Teams had until 5 p.m. Thursday to extend qualifying offers to players eligible for restricted free agency and make decision on player and team options.

By extending a qualifying offer to Clark, he now becomes a restricted free agent. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, per team policy, but spotrac.com lists Clark’s cap hold at close to $1.9 million for 2020-21.

Clark was signed in February to a pair of 10-day contracts as the Magic sought depth at the forward spot last season. He eventually was signed for the remainder of the season and wound up starting five games during the regular-season restart after an injury to Aaron Gordon.

Clark then started all five games of the team’s first-round playoff series with Milwaukee.

Iwundu was the Magic’s second-round pick (33rd overall) in 2017. He appeared in 52 games last season and made 21 starts, averaging 5.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 18.3 minutes. He shot 41.6% overall and 34.1% from the 3-point line.

In his 21 starts, Iwundu averaged 8.5 points in 24.2 minutes per game while shooting 46.8% overall and 39.5% from beyond the arc. He started the final three games of the restart, averaging 14.0 points and shooting 47.8% (including five 3-pointers).

Iwundu played in 182 games in his three seasons with Orlando. He took to Twitter to express his gratitude for his time in Orlando.

Iwundu’s cap hold for 202021 was just over $2 million, according to Spotrac. Frazier was drafted in the second round (35th overall) by the Magic in 2018. He appeared in 29 games during his two seasons with Orlando. The team option was close to $1.7 million, according to Spotrac.
