Saganaki
Though you might find this theatrical, flaming delight at the more touristy locations in Greece, the fire show is actually an American adaptation that’s been around since the 1960s. Saganaki is named for the pan in which it’s cooked; apparently the cheesy appetizer — fried, then flambéed tableside with brandy (everyone shout
“opa!”) and extinguished with a squeeze of lemon — is the most popular variant. Spread the gooey love on fresh pita and enjoy! This one is from a little place called Santorini (111 Geneva Drive in Oviedo; 321-765-8247; facebook. com/SantoriniOviedo
Raclette
More gooey good times with cheese. Raclette hails from Switzerland, where folks figured out that melting creamy, fragrant cheese and scraping it onto other delicious items was a good idea. It’s also somewhat theatrical. Definitely alluring. Also, decadent. It’s typically served with potatoes, cornichon, bread and other goodies. Try it at Morthan Cheese (located inside Plant Street Market, 426 W. Plant Street in Winter Garden; morthancheese.com
Irish Whiskey Onion Soup Wait, what?
If you’re a sucker for the broiler-browned deliciousness of that classic crockserved favorite, French onion, you’re certainly not alone. But since it’s a holiday, why not change things up with this version from the folks at Mount Dora’s beloved Goblin Market? It features caramelized onions, croutons, Swiss, mozzarella and Irish whiskey broth. This place is renowned for knowing its way around a good cocktail, after all!
