70 COVID-19 resident deaths, 5,556 new cases

Florida’s resident death toll from coronaviru­s rose to 33,780 with the addition of 70 more reported fatalities on Tuesday while also adding 5,556 more positive COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 2,090,862.

Infections climbed back over 5,000 after a two-day respite. The state saw three straight days of more than 6,000 late last week. For the last seven days, cases overall have been higher than the previous week, with a daily average of 5,489.

Reported deaths, though, have continued to trend lower, averaging 63 per day in the last seven days. The state has not reported more than 100 deaths since March 26, and has only exceeded 100 reported deaths five times in the last four weeks.

With 654 non-Florida resident deaths, the state’s combined total stands at 34,434. Each report includes deaths from several previous days, as it can take weeks and sometimes several months for reports to appear.

Across the state, 3,011 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of 2 p.m. Tuesday including 145 in Orange County, 67 in Osceola, 51 in Lake and 56 in Seminole. The state’s online tool updates several times throughout the day.

To date, 87,525 people have been hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to the state’s report, which includes 276 newly reported hospitaliz­ations since Monday’s update.

Statewide, 6,437,330 people have received at least one vaccinatio­n shot including 3,769,667 who have completed their shot regimen, whether it’s the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna option or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The count is a snapshot through Monday, based on the report released Tuesday.

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 3,407,090 are over the age of 65.

To date, 12,040,912 people have been tested in Florida, 24,410 more than Monday’s total.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Tuesday for Monday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 6.89%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all tested, the positivity rate was 8.51%.

Central Florida added 1,075 cases on Tuesday for a total of 372,184: That includes 383 more in Orange for 126,044; 202 more in Polk for 62,197; 148 in Osceola for 40,362; 75 in Volusia for 39,120; 136 in Brevard for 37,852; 72 in Seminole for 30,642; 53 in Lake for 27,081; and 6 in Sumter for 8,886.

There were 26 new deaths across all eight Central Florida counties bringing the region’s toll to 5,860. Polk County has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in the region with 1,284, followed by 1,198 in Orange, 818 in Brevard, 730 in Volusia, 611 in Lake, 487 in Osceola, 470 in Seminole and 262 in Sumter.

The virus has infected more than 132 million people and has killed more than 2.8 million worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronaviru­s Resource Center. Nationwide, over 30 million people have been infected and over 555,000 are dead.
