Orlando Magic players provided a welcome reception for their latest teammate Tuesday prior to the team’s practice. Orlando signed Devin Cannady to a 10-day contract. Cannady is fresh off being named MVP of the recently finished G-League playoffs, and he was instrumental in leading the Lakeland Magic to the G-League title.

“I had a warm welcoming walking into the guys today,” Cannady said Tuesday. “Guys were excited to see me, happy for me, joking, ‘Here comes the MVP.’ It was good, lighthearted. I have lot of good relationships with guys in this locker room.”

The 24-year-old Cannady (6-foot-2, 183 pounds) played in 13 games this season, including nine starts, for Lakeland. He averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He also shot 40% (28 of 70) from 3-point range. During the playoffs he averaged 16 points and five rebounds, and hit 9-of-20 3-pointers to help Lakeland capture the 2020-21 NBA G League title over Delaware.

Cannady played his rookie year with the Long Island Nets, the G-League affiliate of the NBA Brooklyn Nets, who signed Cannady in 2019 but waived him four days later. Cannady also spent time with the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2019 NBA Summer League after he went undrafted out of Princeton that year. Cannady is the Ivy League school’s all-time leader in free throws, hitting 90% of his 318 attempts.

“It’s a great feeling. I’ve worked for this and it’s been a goal of mine to get back to this level, work to this level,” Cannady said. “I had a great training camp with [the Magic]. I love the staff here, the coaching staff, the front office, the players and so I’m excited to get going and being part of this rebuild, at least for these 10 days and making the most of this opportunity.”
