Projects honored at GLAAD awards

“Schitt’s Creek” for comedy series, “The Boys in the Band” for limited release film and “Happiest Season” for wide release film were winners at the 32nd annual GLAAD Media Awards.

“Star Trek: Discovery” for drama series, “I May Destroy You,” for limited or anthology series, and “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” for outstandin­g variety or talk show episode were among the other projects honored during Thursday’s virtual ceremony hosted by Niecy Nash. It’s also available on Hulu through June.

The awards recognize what the media advocacy organizati­on calls “fair, accurate, and inclusive” depictions of LGBTQ people and issues. Presenters and winners highlighte­d priorities including the importance of solidarity and self-respect.

“Friends, I’m so proud to stand with the LGBTQ community tonight, just as the LGBTQ community stands with Black and diverse communitie­s,” said Sterling K. Brown, who presented the documentar­y award to “Disclosure.”

JoJo Siwa, the teenage YouTube personalit­y and performer who said in January she’s part of the LGBTQ community, presented the award for children’s programmin­g to “The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo.”

Other awards went to Sam Smith as outstandin­g music artist for the album “Love Goes,” Chika as breakthrou­gh music artist for “Industry Games” and “We’re Here” as outstandin­g reality program.

Cast members from “Glee,” including Chris Colfer, Amber Riley and Jane Lynch, paid tribute to the late Naya Rivera and her character in the series, gay cheerleade­r Santana Lopez.

Waller-Bridge joins ‘Indiana Jones 5’ cast: “Fleabag” creator and Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge is joining the cast of “Indiana Jones 5,” Lucasfilm announced Friday. She will co-star with “Indiana Jones” franchise star Harrison Ford in the film slated for 2022. James Mangold is taking over directing duties from Steven Spielberg, but John Williams is back to score the fifth installmen­t.

Comedy writer Beatts dies: Anne Beatts, 74, a groundbrea­king comedy writer with a taste for sweetness and the macabre who was on the original staff of “Saturday Night Live” and later created the cult sitcom “Square Pegs,” has died.

Beatts died Wednesday at her home in West Hollywood, California, according to her close friend Rona Kennedy.

Starting in 1975 and running for five seasons, Beatts was among a team of gifted writers who helped make “Saturday Night Live” a cultural phenomenon. Beatts would later draw upon her own acknowledg­ed background as an outsider in high school for her own series “Square Pegs.”

Beatts’ later credits included writing for “Murphy Brown” and “The Belles of Bleeker Street,” producing “A Different World” and helping to write the stage musical “Leader of the Pack.”
