42,407 new cases, 347 resident deaths reported this week

Florida’s resident death toll from coronaviru­s rose to 34,021 with the addition of seven reported fatalities on Sunday while also adding 5,520 more positive COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 2,124,233.

From Sunday to Sunday, Florida saw 42,407 new cases and 347 newly reported deaths, according to state health department data.

In comparison, the week ending April 4 saw 37,821 new cases and 496 newly reported resident deaths.

New infections in Florida have risen for the fifth consecutiv­e week. The test positivity rate was 7.47% for April 4 to 10, slightly higher than last week’s 7.03%. It has risen about half a percent each week for the past four weeks.

Each report includes deaths from several previous days, as it can take two weeks or more for fatalities to be logged.

From Sunday to Sunday, the state reported 1,221 new resident hospitaliz­ations, compared to the previous week’s 1,104.

Current COVID-19 hospitaliz­ations have been declining from a high of more than 7,600 in January.

Last Sunday, 2,858 people were hospitaliz­ed, across the state. This Sunday, 3,015 people were hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19 as of 2:20 p.m. including 152 in Orange County, 77 in Osceola, 46 in Lake and 62 in Seminole.

To date, 86,969 residents have been hospitaliz­ed in Florida, according to the detailed informatio­n on cases reported to the state.

Statewide, 7,213,793 people have received at least one vaccinatio­n shot including 4,400,166 who have completed their shot regimen, whether it’s the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna option or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The count is a snapshot through Saturday, based on the report released Sunday.

Of those who have received at least the first dose, 3,495,508 are over the age of 65.

From Sunday to Sunday, 187,698 people were tested across the state, up from the previous week’s figure of 179,348 people.

The April testing average so far is about 27,852 per day, compared to about 46,500 in January, 32,500 in February and 25,000 in March.

Statewide, the latest positivity rate reported Sunday for Saturday’s test results by the Florida Department of Health was 7.67%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. For all tested, the positivity rate is 9.79%.

Central Florida added 1,185 cases on Sunday for a total of 379,458. That includes 369 more in Orange for 128,564; 196 more in Polk for 63,240; 140 in Osceola for 41,144; 172 in Volusia for 40,065; 119 in Brevard for 38,508; 97 in Seminole for 31,317; 75 in Lake for 27,632; and 17 in Sumter for 8,988.

There was one new death across all eight Central Florida counties, although two less in Polk, seven less in Lake and one less in Sumter County than they reported on Saturday, bringing the region’s toll to 5,891. Polk County has the most coronaviru­s fatalities in the region with 1,273, followed by 1,214 in Orange, 828 in Brevard, 739 in Volusia, 472 in Seminole, 613 in Lake, 489 in Osceola and 263 in Sumter.

Central Florida accounts for over 17.9% of the cases statewide and over 17.3% of the deaths.
