Wekiva transfer shines as MVP at ESPN camp

- By Chris Hays

Sincere Edwards put up ridiculous numbers last season as a defensive end at Orangewood Christian.

In fact, his numbers were so unbelievable, most people wrote them off as stats piled up against inferior competition.

Now that he’s transferred to Wekiva High, he’ll be a target of opposition and naysayers, but he’s not concerned. He does, however, feel as if he has something to prove.

“I really do feel like that because everybody thinks competition at Orangewood is different from public schools,” said Edwards, who led Orangewood as a freshman with 110 tackles in 11 games, including a state-leading 32 sacks and 40 tackles for a loss.

“I’m here to prove everybody wrong.”

The first step in doing that came Sunday at the ESPN Elite Underclassmen Camp at West Orange High. Edwards was impressive in every phase of the camp and came away with the MVP award for defensive linemen.

“It feels amazing,” Edwards said. “I trained hard during the week and came here and came out on top.”

Edwards realizes it will be different going from Class 2A Orangewood to 8A Wekiva, but he’s up for the challenge.

“It’s a process and I’m gonna come out of the gate hard this year,” said the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Edwards.

“I’m not going to say it’s going to be another 32-sack year, but it’s going to happen eventually.”

Recruiting has already ramped up for the Class of 2023 prospect. He has six Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers — UCF, Arkansas, Iowa State, Marshall, Michigan State and Utah — and that number will likely hit near 40 by the time he’s a senior.

At Wekiva he will be quite familiar with the Mustangs’ new head coach Jeremiah Rodriguez-Schwartz, who was offensive coordinator at Orangewood the past three seasons.

Edwards said the best part of his game is “how physical I am and I have good footwork and hands.”
