St. Cloud councilman Cooper dies at 72
Charles “Chuck” Cooper, whose service on the St. Cloud City Council spanned nearly four decades, has died, the city announced Saturday. He was 72.
Cooper was first elected in 1985 and took office again from 1994-1995. He won Seat 3 in 2016 on a platform that he would “manage growth and infrastructure” in St. Cloud and “stop wasteful spending in the city.”
Cooper was re-elected in November for a four-year term that was set to end in 2024.
During his campaign, he vowed to continue fighting for lower water rates in the city “because our residents deserve a break,” and noted the rate structure is among the highest in Central
Florida.
After his November victory, he thanked supporters for “their continued trust” in his role as a councilman.
“We have fought many battles together and I promise to continue working for the benefit of the people,” Cooper wrote on his campaign Facebook page. “Please continue to hold each of the council members accountable and participate in the process as much as you are able. You can always count on me to be here to defend the rights of the citizens.”
A native St. Cloudian, Cooper also served stints on the city’s code enforcement board and planning board.
City Manager William Sturgeon offered his condolences to Cooper’s family and loved ones.
“Chuck Cooper was passionate about the City of St. Cloud,” Sturgeon said. “He didn’t hesitate to let you know when he disagreed with you, and I respected that. He always did what he thought was best for the citizens and the city.”
Funeral arrangements have not been released yet. The city hasn’t announced what will happen to Cooper’s vacant seat.
