Knights win opener vs. Canadiens

Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves and the Golden Knights beat the visiting Canadiens 4-1 in the first game of the Stanley Cup semifinal Monday night.

The Knights’ fifth-straight victory in the playoffs ended the Canadiens’ postseason win streak at seven.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Las Vegas. The 36-year-old Fleury, whose 90th career playoff win leaves him two shy of tying Grant Fuhr for third place all-time, has now allowed two or fewer goals in nine of his 13 playoff appearance­s this season.

Alec Martinez, Mattias Janmark, and Nick Holden also scored for the Knights.

Rookie Cole Caufield, the 2021 Hobey Baker Award winner out of Wisconsin, scored his first career playoff goal for the Canadiens, while goaltender Carey Price made 26 saves.

College football: Former Wisconsin DL Tom Burke was charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Minnesota. Burke, 44, is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl. A criminal complaint said Burke denied the accusation. Burke, a consensus All-American in 1998, played four seasons in the NFL.

NBA: League MVP Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets, Giannis Antetokoun­mpo (Bucks), Kawhi Leonard (Clippers), Stephen Curry (Warriors) and Luka Doncic (Mavericks) were named to the All-NBA first team. Antetokoun­mpo was the lone unanimous selection to the first team. 76ers big man and MVP runner-up Joel Embiid was a secondteam pick.

NFL: The Vikings signed DT Sheldon Richardson before their minicamp opened. Richardson, 30, played the last two seasons for the Browns. He had 4 ½ sacks and 10 QB hits in 2020. Richardson previously played for the Vikings in 2018, recording 4 ½ sacks and 16 QB hits . ... Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he doesn’t expect CB Stephon Gilmore to participat­e in the team’s minicamp, which began Monday. Belichick declined to say whether the absence was excused. Gilmore also skipped the team’s 10 recent voluntary workouts over the last two months. He’s entering the final season of the five-year, $65 million deal signed in 2017 and may end up as a training camp holdout. Gilmore, 30, a four-time Pro Bowler and the 2019 defensive player of the year, had 11 INTs in his first four seasons with the Patriots.

Soccer: Several spectators were treated in the hospital for injuries caused by a protestor who parachuted into the stadium before France played Germany at the European Championsh­ip in Munich. Debris fell on the field and main grandstand, narrowly missing France coach Didier Deschamps, when the parachutis­t struck wires for an overhead camera attached to the stadium roof. France won the match 1-0 on an own goal by veteran Germany defender Mats Hummels.

Tennis: Former world No. 1 and two-time Wimbledon champ Andy Murray beat Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-2 at The Queen’s Club grass-court tournament in London for his first match victory in more than a year. It was Murray’s first grass-court match in three years. The 34-year-old Scot has undergone two hip surgeries and has been sidelined for much of the last twos seasons.
