Afternoon downpours that saturated fields, coupled with lightning strikes, caused postponements of several high school football games and delayed starts for many others in the Orlando area on Friday night.

The washouts include two district openers in the first week of heavy league play for Florida.

The Timber Creek (1-2) at Hagerty (1-1) game was called off before the Wolves left their campus. The teams are set to try again on Monday at 7 p.m.

That decision was made at 5:15 p.m. based on “field conditions, lightning in the area and player safety”, according to Huskies athletic director Jay Getty.

Oviedo (3-0) at DeLand (0-1) also was postponed to Monday at 7 p.m.

“We’ve had a lot of rain here this week, we’ve had a lot of rain today,” said DeLand athletic director Lance Jenkins. “The field was very spongy and very wet and water was starting to pool on the field. The decision was made by the referees and by the City of Deland that the field was unsafe to play on.”

Viera (1-1) at East River (1-2), another district date, was moved to Saturday at 10 a.m.

Games involving teams ranked in the Sentinel 16 that were delayed at the start by lightning included No. 1 Seminole (3-0) at Flagler Palm Coast (2-0); No. 7 Kissimmee Osceola (1-1) at No. 16 Olympia (1-1); No. 11 Winter Park (2-1) hosting Orlando University (1-2); Freedom (2-1) at No. 12 Boone (1-1); and Evans (2-1) at No. 15 Lake Brantley (2-1).

The Mount Dora Christian (2-0) at Lake Highland Prep (2-0) game, matching Sunshine State Athletic Conference frontrunners, also was delayed — as was a Bishop Moore (0-2) home game against Treasure Coast (2-0).
