A man died after struggling to stay alive for a week following a hit-and-crash that took place in Volusia County while he and his new wife were traveling through Florida on their honeymoon.

Christopher and Mary Coffey were married in Tennessee last week, according to a GoFundMe for Christopher’s family. About 24 hours later they were in Florida where they were involved in the now-deadly crash.

The couple was on Interstate 95 at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, when they were struck by a white Dodge Charger merging onto the southbound highway from LPGA Boulevard, said the Florida Highway Patrol’s Lt. Christopher Cribbs.

The couple’s car overturned, leaving Christopher with life-threatening injuries and in the hospital, Cribbs said. The accident left Christopher with a fractured his skull and brain injuries, according to a report by FOX 35.

Mary was left without serious injuries, according to the GoFundMe.

The other driver fled the scene, and now troopers are looking for a the Charger with “heavy left front-end damage,” Cribbs said.

On Saturday, Christopher’s family confirmed he passed away, according to an update on the GoFundMe page.

“His wife, Mary, parents,

Joel and Angie, and best friend Jordan were all by his side.

There are many broken hearts today. Chris wasn’t a person who just became your friend, he became your family,” reads the update from Allison Moore, sister to Christopher’s widow Mary. “There are countless stories out there of his kindness, his ambition, and a lot of good laughs. Chris will always be with us through our memories, and his legacy will continue. Thank you again for the support and please keep our family in your thoughts. Rest in peace, big brother.”

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the Charger or its driver is asked to contact the FHP at (407) 737-2200 or Crime Stoppers at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
