Six area teams advance with quarterfin­al wins

Lake Brantley hosts Hagerty and Orange City University is home vs. Port Orange Spruce Creek on Friday in Florida High School Athletic Associatio­n regional semifinal baseball games.

Six teams from the Orlando area in Class 7A, 6A and 5A advanced through Tuesday’s quarterfin­al round with wins. Seven other area teams saw their seasons come to an end with losses.

The Patriots scored five runs in the third inning during an 8-1 win over DeLand in 7A Region 1. Logan Moran went 3-for-4 with 1 run scored while Ethan Beal crossed home plate twice. Isaac Padilla struck out 5 batters and issued just 1 hit and 2 walks in five innings pitched.

Hagerty’s Garrett Baumann struck out 7 batters while going the distance during a 3-2 win against Jacksonvil­le Sandalwood. Baumann yielded 6 hits and 1 walk in the win. Austin Jacobs drove in the winning run on a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lake Brantley and Hagerty split a pair of games early this season. The Patriots won 4-2 on March 8. Hagerty won 8-0 on March 11.

No. 6 seed Apopka plays at St. Johns Bartram Trail after winning 3-2 at No. 3 West Orange. Philip DeVita, Winston Williams and Jeremy Pabon each finished with 2 hits for the Blue Darters.

DeVita doubled and scored 3 runs. Williams finished with an RBI, double and 1 stolen base, and Pabon added a double and 1 run scored.

Windermere High, the No. 1 seed in 7A Region 2, leaned on pitcher Cannon Feazell during a 1-0 win vs. Venice. Feazell struck out 5 batters and allowed only 2 hits and no walks while pitching a complete game. Justin Grant drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Wolverines host Plant City Durant in the semifinals.

In 6A Region 2, Orange City University scored a 10-0 win in six innings over Neptune Beach Fletcher as Todd Kniebbe turned in a all-around standout effort at the plate and on the mound. Kniebbe went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and also struck out 11 batters while allowing 1 hit and 4 walks in five innings pitched.

Spruce Creek won 1-0 at Tallahasse­e Chiles to set up the third meeting this season vs. University. Spruce Creek won 2-1 on April 7. The Titans prevailed 4-3 in a District 4 semifinal last week.

No. 1 seed Lake Minneola is home vs. New Smyrna Beach on Thursday in 5A Region 2 after winning 6-0 vs. Lake Wales.

Ryan Paul struck out 4 batters in five innings before Zachary Colangelo and Zachary Walsh each pitched scoreless innings to combine for the shutout. JoJo Smiley was 3-for-3 with an RBI and 1 run scored and Andrew Clymer was 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run and 2 runs scored.
