Florida woman shot dogs 173 times with gas-powered BB gun for 2 months

A Florida woman was arrested Tuesday after authorities found she was shooting her dogs with a gas-powered BB gun for two months, according to a Hernando County Sheriff ’s Office release.

Jamie Lynn Kujawa, 37, faces multiple charges of aggravated animal cruelty, HCSO said.

In April, a Hernando animal enforcement deputy responded to a call in reference to a woman possibly shooting her dogs with a BB gun at a Spring Hill home, HCSO said.

A witness told the deputy he heard a BB gun fire approximately 15 times over the course of 30 to 45 minutes.

Deputies spoke to Kujawa, who said she didn’t have a BB gun. She was then asked to present information of canine vaccinations, which Kujawa did not have. Deputies investigated Kujawa’s three dogs and noted various injuries and scaring on the feet and paws of each dog. All three dogs were observed to be limping, HCSO said.

Kujawa told deputies the injuries were from the dogs fighting with each other, and she was forced to use water on them to end the violence.

Deputies gave Kujawa a verbal warning for having unvaccinated dogs, and was further instructed to get the dogs vaccinated in 10 days and provide proof. The next day, a deputy returned to the property and observed two dogs with fresh wounds on their legs.

Over the course of the week, deputies checked on Kujawa and the dogs. On one occasion Kujawa said she didn’t have the money to take the dogs to a veterinarian and asked about the county’s owner surrender policy. Several days later, Kujawa

surrendered two of her dogs to Hernando County Animal Services.

A veterinary examination found 173 projectiles embedded in the legs and paws of the two dogs.

On Tuesday, deputies arrived at the Spring Hill home to arrest Kujawa. Investigators found Kujawa had used a gas-powered BB gun to shoot the dogs when they dug under the fence to get out of her yard. Kujawa said she had been shooting the dogs for about two months. In addition to the third dog, Kujawa also had three cats, a ferret, and a

bird were removed from the home. Deputies are investigating the conditions of

those animals, as well.
