Jets coach suspended by NFL for gambling

Jets wide receivers coach Miles Austin has been suspended by the NFL for a minimum of one year for violating the league’s gambling policy.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy on Friday confirmed the suspension, which Austin is appealing. McCarthy added the league would have no further comment until the appeal is resolved.

The former NFL wide receiver did not coach in the Jets’ 19-3 loss to the Jaguars on Thursday night.

Austin’s attorney and agent William P. Deni Jr. said in a statement Austin did not gamble on football. „ Aaron Donald is unlikely to return to the Rams’ defense this season. Donald will miss his fourth straight game with a high ankle sprain Sunday Coach Sean McVay admitted Friday that his seven-time All-Pro lineman and threetime NFL Defensive Player of the Year isn’t expected to play in the final two games of the season . ... Offensive lineman Jack Conklin has agreed to a four-year, $60 million extension to stay with the Browns.

College basketball: The woman who called police to report a family violence assault by Texas basketball coach Chris Beard said Friday that Beard did not strangle her and she never wanted him arrested or prosecuted. Beard was suspended indefinite­ly without pay after his Dec. 12 arrest on a felony charge of strangling his fiancée.

MLB: Outfielder Michael Conforto has agreed to a $36 million, two-year contract with the Giants. ... The Diamondbac­ks acquired highly regarded catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and veteran Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on Friday, sending Daulton Varsho to the Blue Jays.

NHL: Alex Ovechkin tied Gordie Howe for second on the NHL career goals list Friday, scoring his 801st in the Capitals’ game against the Jets. He was mobbed by teammates at the glass to celebrate while his goal song, Big Joe Turner’s “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” blared from arena speakers.
