Windermere senior earns player of year

Accounting for 46 goals for a team that went unbeaten in the regular season and reached the FHSAA state tournament, Windermere’s Jose Moyetones is the 2023-24 Orlando Sentinel Varsity boys soccer player of the year.

Moyetones is among a list of all-area first-team selections from area schools that include Bishop Moore, Cypress Creek, Horizon, Lake Highland Prep, Lake Mary, Lake Nona, Ocoee, Orangewood Christian and West Orange.

All-area teams consist of participan­ts from FHSAA state series schools in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and southwest Volusia counties. Selections were made by the Sentinel staff in consultati­on with area coaches.

Player of the Year

Jose Moyetones, Windermere, Sr.

Buzz: Described by local coaches as “the most superior player in the area,” “by far the best player in the region” and “a great leader and gentlemen on and off the pitch,” the standout forward finished with 26 goals scored and 20 assists. Moyetones led the Wolverines to the Class 7A state tournament while scoring at least 2 goals in a game eight times, including a pair of goals in the state semifinals.

All-Area First Team

John Ghanem, Lake Highland Prep, Sr.

Buzz: Goalkeeper recorded 10 shutouts in 18 games for 3A district champ and regional finalist.

Aidan Godinho, Lake Mary, Sr.

Buzz: Midfielder netted 12 goals and 13 assists in 18 games as conference player of the year.

Jace Henriques, Orangewood Christian, Jr.

Buzz: Skillful with the ball, central midfielder had 11 goals and 12 assists for 2A state runners-up.

Jacob Munoz, Ocoee, Jr.

Buzz: Attacking midfielder led West Metro Conference champs with 14 goals and 8 assists.

Jace Overturf, Bishop Moore, Sr.

Buzz: Midfielder finished with 19 goals and 9 assists for 23-4 team that reached 4A state final.

Finlay Prain, West Orange, Sr.

Buzz: Team captain scored 18 goals and added 5 assists as midfielder for 7A state runners-up.

Carlos Rojas, Lake Nona, Sr.

Buzz: Forward finished with 17 goals and 7 assists for team that went unbeaten in regular season.

Brandon Salcedo, Bishop Moore, Sr.

Buzz: Midfielder led 4A state runner-up Hornets (23-4) with 20 goals scored and 7 assists.

Santiago Tovar, Cypress Creek, Sr.

Buzz: Forward led Bears to 14-4-3 record and 7A regional finals with 17 goals scored and 7 assists.

Karson Vazquez, Horizon, Sr.

Buzz: Team captain paced 5A regional finalists at midfield with 12 goals scored and 25 assists.
