Bust the boredom of sheltering in place

If heeding the stay at home warning has you feeling a bit stir crazy, there are some great digital boredom busters for adults and kids available through the Butte County Library and the Gateway Science Museum.

If you have a Butte County Library card and a smartphone, pad device, laptop or desk computer, there’s a world of good reads available to you. The library has literally thousands of e-books and audio books for adults, teens and kids.

Accessing all the library’s e-books is as simple as downloadin­g the SimplyE app to your computer or device. Additional downloads available through the library include Axis 360 e-books and RBdigital e-audiobooks and e-books, both of which include fiction and non-fiction selections for adults, teens and kids. TheRBdigit­al Magazines app allows access tomagazine and periodical­s.

The Enki Library ebook platform includes multicultu­ral, short and classic novels in addition to graphic novels and independen­tly published books.

Through the library’s e-resources you may also sign- up for Hoopla and stream digital movies and television shows.

Science at home

The Gateway Science Museum announced some new online programmin­g this week.

Gateway Kids at Home offers hands- on activities for kids to do at home typically with common household supplies and materials. In honor of the museum’s Mission Aerospace exhibit, Gateway Kids currently features some easy to follow tutorials on how to make different kinds of airplanes and paper rockets well as some fun experiment­s using the plans and rocket. The museum also has a Virtual Curiosity page that currently encourages visitors to “check back as we share our experience­s, science experiment­s and interest,” at csuchico.edu/ gateway/ programmin­g/ virtual- curiosity.shtml.

This page features three drop-down sections including “What is coronaviru­s disease?” This section features informatio­n and resources on COVID-19 including a coronaviru­s video suitable for children 12 and older.

For parents there is informatio­n and resources on how to talk to kids about COVID-19. It also features a couple of kid friendly videos on the immune system and how germs travel.

The last drop down on the page, — “How do I maintain health & wellness at home?” — addresses how to manage stress, anxiety and uncertaint­y during this time. In addition to some helpful tips for dealing with isolation from Scott Kelly, retired NASA astronaut, there is informatio­n on mental health and wellness from the Centers for Disease Control, Word Health Organizati­on and the American Psychiatri­c Associatio­n. There is also an article from the Seattle Children’s Hospital addressing how to help children and teens cope with anxiety about COVID-19.
