Glenn County Fair called off over health concerns
Silver Dollar Fair still scheduled, Tehama District Fair canceled
Annual event, Tehama District Fair canceled over concerns of spreading virus; Silver Dollar Fair still scheduled.
ORLAND » The annual Glenn County Fair has been canceled in order to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, the Glenn County board of directors decided during an emergency meeting held Wednesday night.
The decision was made to adhere to the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the shelter- inplace order by Gov. Gavin Newsom. California’s shelter-in-place order is in effect until May 10.
The annual event which takes place at the Glenn County Fairgrounds in Orland was scheduled from
May 14-17.
“A rescheduling wasn’t really an option for us,” said Miki Martin, chief executive officer Of the Glenn County Fair. “The carnival, the concessionaires and the vendors travel all over the country. Getting them to participate in a fair two weeks later, it isn’t something that usually fits in their schedule. They usually have a very tight schedule. The fair as a whole couldn’t happen at another time.”
The livestock auction has not been canceled, Martin said.
“We’re working on that. We haven’t for sure decided on anything yet. We’re exploring options for an online auction,” Martin said.
The fair staff will be issuing refunds over the next couple of weeks. The fair office is currently closed to the public but those with questions can email glenncountyfair@gmail.com. Next year’s fair is scheduled for May 20-23.
“This is touching a lot of industries. It’s affecting a lot of people,” Martin said. “The Glenn County Fair is looking forward to being back in 2021.”
Silver Dollar
The Silver Dollar Fair in Chico has not been canceled or postponed according to a post on its Facebook page on March 27. The Silver Dollar Fair is scheduled for May 21-25.
“The Silver Dollar Fair is actively monitoring and assessing the current COVID-19 pandemic. We are in constant communication with CDFA, and the Governor’s Office on the evolving situation and continue to follow their guidance. We continue to look at options for the Junior Livestock Auction and we will keep everyone posted as we receive more information,” the post said.
The Silver Dollar Fairgrounds are closed to the public through May 10 and all events that were scheduled to take place before May 10 are being rescheduled to later in the year.
Tehama County
The 100th annual Tehama District Fair was officially canceled on March 24. The fair, which is held in Red Bluff, was scheduled for April 30-May 3.
Fair organizers have moved the Junior Livestock Auction to the third weekend in May, and have discussed holding it online only.
