North state fishing report

-

According to the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, all trout plants in the state are continuing as scheduled with the exception of Fishing in the City events, which have been canceled due to social distancing concerns.

GENERAL

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Many of the launch ramps on the river have been closed down, and the remaining ones are packed with anglers wanting to take advantage of the improving striper fishing as the first of the striper schools move upriver for the spawn. Action is good near Knights Landing, Verona and Miller Park. Sturgeon are also being caught, but most are oversized. Fly fishing is good on the Sacramento River near Redding. Wild rainbows are responding to a variety of hatches throughout the day. Flows from Keswick Dam are around 5,000 cfs. Anything below 7,000 cfs provides good access for shore anglers.

LAKE ALMANOR: All the restrooms and campgrounds are closed, but the Canyon Dam boat ramp is open with a dock in place, and public access is allowed. Snow is quickly melting, and water temps are in the mid-40s. Bite at the dam is slower, surface activity has slowed. Bank fishing pretty good at Geritol Cove and Hamilton Branch.

LAKE AMADOR: Lake Amador was still open as of Sunday with restrictions for fishing off of the docks and keeping distance on the shorelines. The store was selling equipment through an open window, but no access to the store.

BLACK BUTTE RESERVOIR: The Army Corp. of Engineers has closed the lake, including the Eagles Pass, Anglers Cove and the camp/launch facilities. We believe the archery range and disk golf course will remain open along with the Grizzly Flats 4×4 trails, equine trails, and walk-in hunt/fish access for shotgun and bows only.

CLEAR LAKE AND AREA LAKES: Clear Lake and the surrounding area were shut down Sunday by public health officials in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Lake County

Health Officer Gary Pace closed all motels, campgrounds, vacation rentals and waterways in the county — including Clear Lake, Cache Creek and Lake Pillsbury — after they were swarmed by a crush of visitors over the weekend. FEATHER RIVER: The striper run has begun and the first of the schools are beginning to show up at Beercan Beach on the lower river. The weekly fishing report, compiled by Western Outdoor News, highlights the best angling opportunities in the north state. The report is limited during the COVID-19 pandemic, but will return in full form soon.
