Friends on the Street continuing their mission

-

On a typical Sunday in City Plaza, when Chico Friends on the Streets (CFOTS) shows up to distribute food, clothing, toiletries, sleeping bags and other items needed for survival, there is generally a good vibe. For many reasons the homeless struggle, but people bring their best selves to the gathering and share smiles, stories and words of appreciation.

With the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, this last Sunday was more challenging. After all, the homeless, with no secure shelters for self- quarantine or any legal place to rest, are naturally scared and anxious. Their daily survival routines are disrupted and nothing is predictable. They know they are vulnerable to catching a strange new disease, while doing their best to survive and find mutual support.

Our community should be grateful to those putting themselves out on the front lines. CFOTS is now reduced to a skeleton crew; this Sunday, long time CFOTS member Patrick Newman and Councilor Scott Huber were on the plaza experimenting with “social distancing” approaches. This isn’t surprising as neither is known for giving up when things get tough. Patrick did all he could to make sure people were spread throughout the plaza. He and Scott handed out prepackaged food and educated about the need to keep six feet apart. Along with a meal, people got the message they aren’t going to be deserted.

More than ever, CFOTS needs your support. If you have ideas or resources to share, contact them at chicofriendsonthestreet@gmail.com.
