Editorial on school policy was insulting

-

The editorial piece on April 9 (“Positive steps from school board”) was insulting and insensitive to the many students, parents and community members who are suffering from the consequences of the CUSD a.m./p.m. instruction model. It is disproportionately affecting minorities, the poor, and ESL. ( ½0/21 CUSD board meeting.)

It is obvious the schools desperately need the increase in mental health resources and counselors, as advocated by Mr. Tennis.

To applaud the board as single unit is dishonest. Only one board member has been advocating for our students and community the last four months. The other four ignoring the most recent evidence and suggestions from the premier pandemic specialists in the country, that full time in person learning is safe and best for our students. There is no intelligent justification for any other school model.

CUSD has more students, but more staff, administration, and facilities than our neighbors. We still have eight weeks of school. This is not insignificant. CUTA and the CTA are the only organizations that want this policy to continue. It is clear the harm of staying out of school far outweigh the challenges of returning, especially if you are of color or poor.

The fact this paper can’t see this obvious fact is disturbing. To publicly come out in favor of it continuing should shock all of us.

I humbly request this paper try to remain objective, and not succumb to the influence of special interests.
