Viral numbers rise in Butte County schools

As of Tuesday, there are 780 active cases of COVID-19 in Butte County, according to Butte County Public Health. A total of 167 new cases were reported since Monday. Another COVID-19 death was also reported bringing the total to 209 people. Currently, 100 people remain hospitaliz­ed.

Enloe Medical Center reported that as of Tuesday morning, there are 54 COVID-19 patients receiving treatment and of those 54 people, 47 people (87 percent) were not fully vaccinated. Enloe Medical Center also said four patients are currently in the ICU. A year ago, there were 16 COVID patients receiving treatment at Enloe.

Schools in Butte and Glenn counties reopened fully to in-person learning earlier in August and COVID-19 cases are continuing to climb throughout the area.

Chico State

As of Tuesday, Chico State reported a total of 57 students and 12 employees who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The fall semester started for Chico State on Aug. 23. The university says a total of 88 cases of COVID-19 were reported since Aug. 1.

Chico Unified School District

The Chico Unified School District began school Aug. 16 and since then there have been a total of 109 cases of COVID-19 among students and 21 cases among staff.

The most confirmed student cases are being reported at Pleasant Valley High School according to the CUSD COVID-19 dashboard. There have been 28 students who tested positive since the start of school. The biggest spike at PV was during the week of Aug. 21 when 16 positive cases were reported among students. At Chico High, there have been 10 student cases.

Hooker Oak Elementary has the most student cases among the district’s 13 elementary schools with 12 confirmed cases, 10 of those cases were reported during the week of Aug. 21. Shasta Elementary School has 10 confirmed cases among its students and three positive cases among the staff. Meanwhile, there have been zero staff or student cases reported at Chapman Elementary School.

Oroville

In the Oroville City Elementary School District, there have been a total of 23 students and four staff members test positive for COVID-19 in the last four weeks. The highest number of cases is being reported at Oakdale Heights Elementary School with six positive cases among the 345 students on campus.

A total of five students out of 505 students at Stanford Avenue Elementary tested positive for COVID-19.

The Oroville Union High School District is reporting a total of two COVID-19 cases since Aug. 17. However, the OUHSD dashboard was last updated Aug. 23.

Glenn County

According to the Glenn County Health and Human Services Agency, Orland Unified School District has the most COVID cases with 25. The latest numbers were released by Glenn County HHSA on Monday.

In Orland, there are eight positive cases reported at Orland High School and seven cases reported at both C.K. Price Middle School and Fairview Elementary. A total of two cases were reported at Mill Street School and one case reported at Lake School.

The Glenn County HHSA doesn’t separate the numbers between students and staff so the positive cases reported are combined numbers.

In Willows, a total of 10 cases are being reported within the schools. Murdock Elementary has five COVID-19 cases while Willows High has four cases. Willows Intermedia­te reported just one case.

In Hamilton City, three cases are being reported with two at Hamilton City Elementary and one at Hamilton High School.
