Panthers volleyball gets sweep, defeats LP

The Chico High volleyball team swept the Thunderbir­ds 3-0 Tuesday night at home. The Panthers won 25-15, 25-14 and 25-16.

Madi Struthers led Chico with 11 kills while Carly McPherson provided nine kills, four aces. Macy Mattern had 13 assists and three aces while Maya Cann added 11 assists. Kait Nichols chipped in three aces for the Panthers.

Chico will host a four-team round-robin tournament featuring Yuba City, River Valley and Pleasant Valley on Friday. Chico will take on Yuba City at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lincoln Field House.

WHITNEY 3, PLEASANT VALLEY 1 >> The Vikings fell 25-11, 23-25, 2511 and 25-19 to Whitney at home.

Emma Daughtery led the Vikings with 10 kills and three aces, Kenna Chapin had 13 digs while Kendal Thau added 11 digs. Keira Maguire led the team with 25 assists.

PV (2-6) hosts Del Oro at 6 p.m. Thursday.

ORLAND 3, WILLOWS 1 >> The Trojans won 25-20, 26-28, 25-7 and 26-24 over rival Willows at home.

Franchesca Martins led the Trojans with 17 kills, 11 digs and Mylie Langan added seven kills. Zoey James chipped in seven aces while Hannah Martins contribute­d eight digs.

Orland (10-2) hosts Anderson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Prep field hockey PLEASANT VALLEY 6, RIVER VALLEY

0>> The Vikings opened their season with a 6-0 shutout of River Valley on Tuesday night.

Senior Brooklyn Longueira had two goals and an assist. Kyra Letcher, Riley Kucich, Bella Espinosa and Gabby Ramierez had goals. Kendall Greytok had two assists and Anna Isherwood had one assist.

Savannah Cresswell played goalie the first half and Taylor Berge the second half, neither had a save opportunit­y.

Ellie Gallaty and Emma Devine were credited for strong midfield play.

PV (1-0) plays at Chico High at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

College men’s soccer

BUTTE 3, CONSUMES RIVER 3 >> The Roadrunner­s played their first game in 21 months and played to a draw on the road Tuesday. Butte trailed 1-0 at halftime but scored its first goal in the 67th minute with both teams down one player due to red cards. Sander Hansen scored the unassisted goal for Butte.

The game remained 1-1 until the 85th minute when Alexander Hjulmand scored from 12-yards out on a scrambled lost ball. Consumnes then scored in the 87th and 90th minutes on a goal from 50 yards out in what was a frantic last 12 minutes. Quintin Benn-John then equalized in the 93rd minute to tie the game. The game featured a total of six yellow cards and three red cards.

Simon Huebner, Antoine Joblet and JovanniCas­illas were credited for strong play by head coach Ross Sandberg. Butte (0-0-1) goes on the road against Merrit College on Friday.
