Miami ends Phils’ winning streak

MIAMI >> Miguel Rojas had two hits and three RBIs during a seven-run sixth inning and the Miami Marlins beat Philadelph­ia 10-3 Friday night, stopping the Phillies’ six-game winning streak.

The Phillies started Friday two games behind NL East leader Atlanta. It was also the end of Philadelph­ia’s 11-game winning streak against division opponents.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled and tripled and Jesús Sánchez homered for the Marlins.

Miami snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth, tagging Philadelph­ia starter Kyle Gibson and reliever JD Hammer.

Rojas’ go-ahead single off Gibson over a drawnin infield scored Chisholm from third. Jorge Alfaro and Joe Panik hit RBI singles with the bases loaded and Bryan De La Cruz’s bases-loaded walk forced in a run. Alfaro raced home on a wild pitch by Hammer and Rojas’ tworun single capped the scoring.

Steven Okert (1-1) got the final out in the sixth for his first win since 2017. Ross Detwiler and Zach Pop followed with perfect innings and Zach Thompson closed it with a scoreless ninth.

Gibson (10-6) allowed eight runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The righthande­r acquired from Texas July 30 struck out four and walked two.

Luzardo was lifted after Matt Vierling’s tying double in the sixth. Luzardo allowed three runs, five hits, struck out three, walked two and hit a batter in 5 2/3 innings.

Vierling got the Phillies to 3-2 with his run-scoring triple in the second.

The Marlins erased an early deficit on Sánchez’s three-run shot in the first. Sanchez drove Gibson’s change-up over the wall in right center for his seventh homer of the season.

CUBS 6, PIRATES 5 >> Chicago Cubs manager David Ross and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer missed the team’s victory over Pittsburgh after they tested positive for COVID-19.

Michael Hermosillo homered and drove in three runs, leading Chicago to its fourth consecutiv­e win. Frank Schwindel also connected, and Ian Happ had three more hits on a wet afternoon at Wrigley Field.

A spokesman for the team said Ross and Hoyer are feeling fine and quarantini­ng. Both are vaccinated.

RAYS 5, TWINS 3 >> Michael Wacha struck out seven over six innings, Kevin Kiermaier had an RBI triple during a three-run second and Tampa Bay beat Minnesota.

The AL East-leading Rays had lost two straight following a nine-game winning streak.

Wacha (3-4) gave up two runs and three hits, including two homers. He was 0-2 with a 6.99 ERA in his previous eight starts.

RED SOX 8, INDIANS 5 >> Kyle Schwarber hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, then delivered a tiebreakin­g, two-run double in the seventh that sent Boston over Cleveland.

Hunter Renfroe added a three-run homer in the seventh as Boston won its third straight, holding its spot for the second AL wild-card spot with 25 games remaining in the regular season.

Kevin Plawecki and Jonathan Araúz also homered for the Red Sox, who added their ninth player to the COVID-related injured list in a one-week span earlier Friday yet won again with a piecemeal lineup.

METS 6, NATIONALS 2 (10 INNINGS) >> Kevin Pillar drove in two with a 10th-inning double and New York recovered after blowing a late lead to beat Washington for the Mets’ fifth straight win.

Pete Alonso singled to score automatic runner Francisco Lindor leading off the 10th, and Pillar’s double off Austin Voth (31) stretched the lead to 5-2. Jonathan Villar added another RBI single before Jeurys Familia pitched a clean 10th.

The surge bailed out closer Edwin Díaz (5-4), who allowed two runs in the ninth, the first he has allowed since Aug. 6.

YANKEES 4, ORIOLES 3 (11 INNINGS) >> Giancarlo Stanton led off the 11th inning with an RBI single and New York came back to edge Baltimore,

Stanton also homered as the Yankees remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the race for the first AL wild card.

Ryan Mountcastl­e hit an RBI single in the 10th that put Baltimore ahead 3-2. DJ LeMahieu answered with a tying single in the bottom half.

TIGERS 15, REDS 5 >> Dustin Garneau hit a two-run homer and a solo shot, Robbie Grossman had a three-run blast, and Detroit routed struggling Cincinnati.

Jonathan India and Eugenio Suárez homered for the Reds, NL wild-card contenders who have lost five of six.

ROCKIES 4, BRAVES 3 >> Antonio Senzatela overcame a leadoff home run by Ozzie Albies, pitching seven strong innings as Colorado beat Atlanta.

The Braves maintained a two-game lead in the NL East over Philadelph­ia, which lost at Miami.

CARDINALS 15, BREWERS 4 >> Nolan Arenado homered twice in the first three innings to help St. Louis trounce Milwaukee in a milestone performanc­e for Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina.

St. Louis hit a seasonhigh six homers. Arenado drove a two-run shot in the first inning and went deep again in the third for his 28th and 29th of the season. Molina hit a grand slam, Harrison Bader had a three-run shot, Tyler O’Neill provided a tworun blast and Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot.

ANGELS 3, RANGERS 2 >> Shohei Ohtani allowed two runs, struck out eight and threw a stateside careerhigh 117 pitches in seven innings, and Los Angeles beat Texas.

The Japanese two-way star leads the majors with 42 homers and dropped his ERA to 2.97. He went at least seven innings for the fifth time in 20 starts this season. He reached at least 100 pitches for the fourth time.
