Jail records show Labor Day weekend numbers down
CHICO >> The Butte County Jail records department showed that this year’s Labor Day weekend was slightly slower than the same three days in 2020.
The booking records from the Butte County Jail records division showed that Labor Day weekend 2021, which lasted from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6, 2021, 62 people were booked into the Butte County Jail — 12 fewer than in 2020. Sixteen of those came on Labor Day itself, with seven people facing charges relating to alcohol. Nineteen arrests were made in Chico between Saturday and Monday, with nine arrests made in Chico Monday. There were six DUI-related arrests made in Chico over the three-day span.
Records showed that from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7, 2020, 74 people were arrested. On Labor Day 2020, 25 people were placed under arrest at the jail, according to the records search. On Sept. 7, 2020, Labor Day, eight of the 25 people placed under arrest faced charges relating to alcohol.
Early Saturday morning the Chico Police Department received multiple calls of a shooting which occurred at a homeless encampment at Teichert Pond. A press release stated officers arrived within three minutes and located two people with gunshot wounds on the north side of the ponds. One of the wounded, who police said Saturday was in stable condition, had a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The second person was wounded in the abdomen. Medics arrived on scene and began lifesaving measures on the second person but were unsuccessful, pronouncing the victim deceased on scene.
Chico police said an investigation is ongoing. The Butte County Coroner’s Office said the name of the deceased has not been released and officers are trying to notify next of kin. Chico police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Violence Suppression Unit of the Chico Police Department at 897-4910.
Saturday night Chico Police Department dispatchers received reports of a man threatening to shoot people, later learning the man was associated with two other men who fired several shots into a residence on Wisconsin Street in Chico.
As the three men were leaving the area, they allegedly threatened another person with a firearm. When officers arrived the three men had run away, with two of the men running in the opposite direction of the officers. Police say that one of the subjects was in possession of a 9 mm handgun. Officers detained the three men, the release said, identifying the men as Mario Urzuaavalos, 19; Alan Partida, 23; and Jesus Baez, 27.
The Chico Police Violent Suppression Unit detectives assisted with the investigation and identified the subjects and their activities as gang related offenses.
The three men were arrested and transported to Butte County Jail. The men are facing charges including promoting a criminal street gang, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, conspiracy, exhibiting a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
On Sunday Chico police said in press release it arrested Michael Braun after serving a search warrant on the 1000 block of Salem Street. Braun was seen riding a Norco Storm mountain bike Saturday. An officer familiar with mountain bikes researched recent thefts of mountain bikes and discovered that on June 8, a similar mountain bike was reported missing at a residential burglary in unincorporated Butte County. A search warrant was obtained to recover the bicycle from Braun’s residence.
Upon serving the search warrant, officers contacted Braun at his residence where they say they recovered several stolen bike frames, identifiable bicycle parts, as well as 3.6 grams of methamphetamine.
Braun, 36, was arrested and transported to Butte County Jail on suspicion of possessing stolen property, possession of methamphetamine and possession of property with serial numbers obliterated.
