A reminder to ‘lay a few down’

-

I enjoyed the recent letter to the editor by Timothy Lynch. It was a welcome break from politics. I would like to offer another item about baseball While watch a recently televised game involving the Los Angles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants that was won by the Giants, the announcer noted that the Giants’ two heavy hitters had made successful bunts during the later part of the game and all season to date the Dodgers had only bunted successfully three times. It appears that the Dodgers could use a few lessons on how to bunt.

As a former coach, manager, and umpire in baseball from the little league level to semi-pro, I always felt the the bunt was a great weapon to use during the game. As a manager, I always started out our batting practices with a few bunts. The words were ‘Lay a few down.” It helped in keeping the eyes on the ball and was often useful during the game. I have been involved with the game for almost 75 years and have always loved the game as a participant and now at 92, a spectator.
