North State Symphony begins new season

- By Verda Mackay

After many months of challenges, North State Symphony is beginning a new season, “Crescendo,” with the first of its Masterworks series of four concerts. This concert marks the 20th year of offering excellent classical music to appreciative audiences.

Led by the high-energy master director and conductor Scott Seaton, North State Symphony offers, “The Soldier’s Tale,” by composer Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer C.D. Famuz.

The concert will be performed Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cascade Theatre in Redding. On Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. it can be enjoyed at the Laxson Auditorium in Chico.

North State Symphony is thrilled to return to live performances beginning with this 4-concert Masterworks Series. Other concerts to be enjoyed include the traditional Holiday Concerts, a new Family Concert, a week of Youth Concerts and special virtual content online.

The new season of this amazing symphony orchestra is eagerly anticipated by orchestra musicians and audiences. Director Seaton explained, “We are all starved for live music and the energy of coming together and sharing an experience as a community. Join us for Stravinsky’s, ‘The Soldier’s Tale,’ in this unique collaboration with Shasta College Theatre as we live a work created from the necessity to adapt in times similar to today. This powerful story is fused with all the rhythmic pizazz that we have come to expect from Igor Stravinsky and is an experience not-to-be-missed.”

Guest artists for this exciting concert are Shasta College Theatre Director Greg Thorson, and actors Blake Fisher, Jacob McDuffey and Ashley Olson.

“The Soldier’s Tale” is more than a symphonic concert. It is a theatrical work, read, played and danced by actors, accompanied by orchestral instruments.

The story tells the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. It premiered in 1918.

After such a trying year away from live music, North Music Symphony members are looking forward to being reintroduced to the world now around them.

They eagerly look forward to seeing things with fresh eyes and ears, and reflecting musically on the times, both past and present

Other concerts in the Masterworks series include “A Little Mahler,” November 6 in Chico, “Finding Inspiration,” Feb. 12, 2022m and “Unstoppable Beethoven,” May 15, 2022. The same concerts will be performed at the Cascade Theatre in Redding.

North State Symphony is grateful to its 2021-22 season sponsor Dignity Health. Additional support is received from sponsors and individuals whose support makes it possible for this splendid orchestra to fulfill its mission of achieving excellence in musical performances and education in the communities.
