Highway 99 fiber optic project slated for Tuesday

Work to install fiber optic cables along Highway 99 will begin Tuesday and construction may temporarily affect lower Bidwell Park trails and roadways.

This Caltrans highway project will consist of fiber optic cable system installation and new traffic management systems for Highway

99 from Southgate Avenue to Garner Lane, the city of Chico said in a press release. The new fiber optic lines will primarily be installed underground except in some locations, such as the Bidwell Park viaduct structure, where conduit will be strapped to the side of the bridge.

The city said in the interest of park visitor safety, all or portions of South Park Drive, Petersen Drive and related trails may be closed or detoured to avoid the project work area. The fiber optic project work in Bidwell Park is expected to last approximately two weeks.
