A conversation between officers and a man parked near the Kohl’s department store turned into an arrest on suspicion of having a loaded gun and heroin in the early morning Tuesday.

The Chico Police Department reports at about 12:30 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of the department store at 1505 Springfield Drive when the officer spotted an occupied vehicle stopped in the parking lot.

Chico police said in their news release because the area had no currently opened business, the officer decided to speak with the driver of the car, Jacoby Gilbert, 46.

The officer reported he and Gilbert had a “casual conversation” during which the officer said Gilbert admitted to having a weapon in his vehicle.

After the conversation the officer searched the car and found a Glock handgun, three loaded magazines, heroin, methamphetamine and Xanax pills.

Gilbert was then arrested on suspicion of being an felon and an addict in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and possession of heroin.
