Chico preps for YC rush attack

Orland-Corning matchup moved to Thursday due to ref shortage

As high school football teams prepare for week five of the regular season, most Butte and Glenn County teams will continue with their Friday slate of games — with one exception.

Due to a shortage of referees, Orland played Corning on Thursday night at home in a matchup originally scheduled for Friday. Trojans’ coach Nick Velazquez said he received a call Monday morning in which league officials said, “It’s your turn.” Last week it was Red Bluff and Paradise who had their Friday game changed to Thursday night.

Chico High (3-1) will look to stay undefeated at home Friday when it hosts Yuba City (3-2).

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Panthers have won three straight games against Las Plumas, Foothill and Lassen after a loss in their season-opener to Whitney of Rocklin.

The Panthers defeated Lassen 49-7 in week four, scoring all of their points in the first half. Chico will look to get off to a similar start against a tough Yuba City team.

The Honkers have a strong rushing attack led by its offensive line. Yuba City has wins over PV in week two, Pleasant Grove in week three and is coming off a 58-18 win against River Valley in week five.

Against Pleasant Valley in week two, Yuba City passed for 107 yards but was led by its rushing attack, which tallied 344 yards and five touchdowns. Honkers’ senior running back Joaquin Porcayo rushed 13 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns against PV. Last week against River Valley the senior ran 10 times for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while junior Brandon Sanders ran 10 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns.

Other games

After a one-score home win over Placer in last week’s matchup, Pleasant Valley (2-2) will travel to Rohnert Park to take on Rancho Cotate (3-1). Kickoff in Rohnert Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.

It will be the final nonleague matchup for the Vikings as they prepare for Enterprise at home to open Eastern Athletic League play in week six.

In a battle of two Butte County teams, Durham (2-2, 0-1 Sacramento Valley League) and Paradise will face off in a SVL matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Durham. It will be the first league game for the Bobcats, who have had one game canceled thus far due to COVID-19.

Oroville (0-3, 0-1 Butte View League) will look to rebound after a 47-0 loss to Las Plumas in last week’s Victory Bell game when they host non-league opponent Anderson (2-0) in week five at 7:30 p.m. at Harrison Stadium in Oroville.

The Thunderbirds (3-1, 1-0 BVL) will look to give Enterprise (4-0) its first loss of the season when the teams play at 7:30 p.m. in Redding. Following the matchup with Enterprise, LP will have a bye week in week six before returning home to open BVL play against Gridley in week seven.

Hamilton and Gridley will also be playing nonleague matchups at home Friday. Hamilton (2-1) will host Big Valley Christian (05), and Gridley (1-2, 1-0 BVL) will host Live Oak (1-2).

Biggs (3-0, 1-0 Cascade Valley League) will play a CVL league matchup against Etna at 7:30 p.m in Etna.
