Corning boys win XC opener

PV field hockey beats Chico High in shootout

The Corning High boys cross country team won the 5,000 meter Butte Valley League race Wednesday at the Sutter Buttes. It was the first BVL race of the season.

In team scores Corning finished first, Las Plumas second, Orland third, Sutter fourth and Gridley fifth. The meet also had competitor­s from Oroville as well as Wheatland.

Orland’s Jesse Hicks finished in first place with a time of 18 minutes and 21 seconds. Corning’s Tyler Hunt was the top finisher for the Cardinals, finishing in fourth place in 19:45. Wyatt Stanhope of Oroville finished fifth in 19:49, Landen Parrott of LP finished seventh in 20:19. Gridley’s Emmanuel Hernandez Martinez was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, finishing 12th in 21:10.

Of the 38 racers competing, Corning had five racers finish in the top 20. Las Plumas had three in top 20, and Orland and Gridley had two each.

The teams will next compete on Friday at the West Valley coed invitation­al.

GRIDLEY AT BVL CENTER MEET » Las Plumas, Orland, Oroville, Gridley along with Sutter competed Wednesday at the Sutter Buttes.

In the final team scores, Las Plumas finished first, followed by Sutter and Oroville.

Madalyn Robertson and Olivia Robertson finished first and second for Las Plumas, clocking times of 20:52 and 21:28. Orland’s Paris Esther finished third in 22:00.

The top finisher from Oroville was Ariana Diaz, who finished 11th overall in 26:04. Gridley’s top finisher was Gisela Cardenas, who clocked a 31:40 to finish inside the top 20 in 19th place.

PLEASANT VALLEY 2, CHICO

1 » Pleasant Valley won at home Wednesday in a match that was won in a shootout after a tied match after double overtime.

After a scoreless first half, Chico scored first on a goal by Jojo Bishop. Bishop passed the ball to Fiona Nelson, who attempted a shot that deflected off the PV goalie before Bishop scored on the rebound.

With under two minutes left in the fourth quarter PV tied the game up at 1-1 on a goal by Kendall Greytok off an assist by Brooklyn Longueira.

In the shootout, Chico went 2-for-4, with goals by Nelson and Isabella ValleSnyde­r. PV scored on all four attempts with goals by Greytok, Longueira, Megan Holloway and Kyra Letcher to win the matchup.

Pleasant Valley (9-3, 9-1 Eastern Athletic League) plays next at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Davis.

Chico (5-4, 5-3 EAL) plays next at 6:45 p.m. Friday at home against Davis.
