84 players compete in Butte Creek women’s invite

The theme for the 55th Annual Butte Creek Women’s Invitation­al Tournament was “Women in Golf-Then and Now.” The field of 84 players in the four-player, two best-ball, Stableford format was divided into three flights based on team handicap. Winning overall low gross with 202 points was the team of Karla Dreiss, Sally Stemen, Kelly MacKinnon and Dee Sanders. The overall low net team was Sheila McMurphy, Linda Mowell, Becky Callas and Liz Mosher with 267 points.

Mildred Zaharias-“Babes” flight: 1, Kay Kurdziel, Nancy Stallins, Mary Michel and Leslie Williams, 266 points; 2, Colleen Coutts, Rochelle Health, Gail Cole and Donna Mattingly, 261 points; 3, Jeanie Lowe, Sherry Sue, Paula Sands and Sue Snow, 251 points.

Annika Sorenstam“Angels” flight: 1, Barbara Joronen, Gail Johnson, Darlene Thomasson and Betty Linzy, 253 points; 2, Sandy Fortino, Kris McGee, Joye Smith and Jennifer O’Donoghue, 241 points; 3, Irma Jenkins, Lynne Beyers, Gloria Burson and Melinda Self, 236 points.

Nelly Korda-“Nymphs” flight: 1, Marian Chandler, Yumiko Hankins, Kit Harvey and Maile Alfaro, 240 points; 2, tie, Linda Scarff, Carol Moore, Marilyn Winterstei­n and Penny Wickman, along with Paula Rich, Cyndi Arregui, Sue Bechtol and Karen Krueger, 234 points.

Team putting competitio­n: 1, Ruth Younger and Pat Radisich; 2, tie, Dreiss and MacKinnon, Williams and Kurdziel, Self and Linda Arellano. Chipping competitio­n: 1, tie, Debbie Maderos and Fortino.

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club also held its weekly game last week. Irma Jenkins was at the top of the leader board in the first flight with a net score of 71. Others earning a little golf shop credit were: 2. Sherri Kimmelshue, 72; 3, tie, Sandy Fortino and Sheila McMurphy, 74. Second flight: 1, Darlene Thomasson, 78; 2, Karen Beckman, 85; 3, Paula Rich, 89.

The 15th Annual Men’s Fall Classic was held last Saturday, playing from the black tees.

Winning the first flight with a two-man, best

ball score of 99.8 was the team of Tadd Brothers and Steve Christophe­l. The father-son team of Bill and Davis Rich took the second spot with a score of 101.2. Rounding out the payoff spots in the first flight was the third place team of Derek Minetti and Chris Scarff at 102.67. The Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club traveled to the Almanor area and

played Bailey Creek for its semi-monthly tournament, braving the cold and the wind in the process.

The weekly game for the Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club was called, “Mutt & Jeff” wherein players counted the par 3’s, the par 5’s and one par 4, subtractin­g onehalf a player’s handicap. Sandy Goble was low gross on the day with an 83. Elaine Thomas shot 5-under her handicap to win low net with a 67. Spectacula­r shots

Dick Brooks chalked up his seventh career ace last week at Rolling Hills Links Golf Course on the 14th hole. Witnessing Brooks’ perfect 120-yard, 8-iron tee shot were his playing companions Mike Liddell and Jim Boyd.

Julie Smith aced the 12th hole at Bidwell during the ladies guest day tournament last week. Enjoying Smith’s perfect 97-yard pitching wedge tee shot were her teammates, Betty Linzy, Liz Hofeling and Becky Callas.

Jeff Fontana made an eagle two on the 7th hole at Butte Creek. Fontana hit a 95-yard pitching wedge into the cup as attested by his playing companions, Steve Haws and Dave Schwartz.
