Take some steps to protect our democracy

-

Due to the word limits in letters to the editor (LTE) I want to urgently request the writers/ editors of this paper to write an article about the current threats to our democracy and solutions/ actions that can be taken to protect it.

Without evidence, the “Big Lie” has resulted in large numbers of people believing Joe Biden was not legitimately elected. This has resulted in a number of states passing laws that result in making it harder for some people to vote in the name of voter security. There are many enablers who either support the Big Lie or remain silent in hopes of reaping political advantage at the cost to our democracy.

Wednesday 10-20-21, the opportunity to even discuss the Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) was blocked by the filibuster. The FTVA has too much to summarize in a LTE. The solution is to modify the Senate filibuster rules, at least for bills that address constitutional rights, so that Senators in the minority cannot simply block this kind of legislation.

Readers, please call Senators Dianne Feinstein 202-2243841 and Alex Padilla 202-2243553 and urge them to ask Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema to vote for a change to the filibuster rules. Next, call the offices of Joe Manchin 202-2243954 and Kyrsten Sinema 202224-4521 and urgently ask them to vote to modify the filibuster rules to allow this legislation to pass. — Mike Schultz, Chico
