CHICO » Chico police arrested a juvenile after a stabbing was reported Monday at Children’s Park in Chico.

Chico High School went into a lockdown shortly after declaring a code red on Monday afternoon.

A juvenile was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a firearm, according to a press release from the Chico Police Department.

The person who was stabbed was also a juvenile, police said, and was treated and released at Enloe Medical Center.

The code red was called at the high school at 12:25 p.m., according to a dispatcher. After a lockdown was put into effect, the alert was resolved by campus officials at 12:46 p.m.

Chico sophomore Maggie Bitale was trying to leave campus during the start of lunch period before the lockdown started.

“They were saying to get away from the windows. At first I thought it was a drill because they were playing the music that they play for passing periods but then they immediately turned it off because they knew it was real, said Bitale.”

Bitale and her classmate, Mallory Boyd, a junior at the high school, had been in the welding building.

“They told us we needed to stop talking and hide. At first we were in the front but they told us to go to the back and get away from all the windows,” said Boyd.
