Chico is celebrating 150 days of events for its 150th birthday and is kicking off with the return of Thursday Night Market at 6 p.m. today in downtown Chico.

From May 1 to Sept. 30, an event is scheduled for every single day with activities such as hiking Monkey Face, picking fruit at the Chico State University Farm and touring Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. brewery. A full calendar of events can be viewed at www.choosechico.com/celebrating-150-years.

Deputy City Manager Jennifer Macarthy said the celebration is intended to highlight classic Chico events in hopes of reminding people what’s special about Chico.

“It’s really an opportunity for people to really learn, experience and explore our community in ways that maybe they haven’t thought of before,” Macarthy said.

There will be events that include artists, entertainment events, learning events and historical events. Some other notable activities include reading a book with your toes dipped in Big Chico Creek, planting a tree with the Butte Environmental Council and visiting local landmarks.

At the Thursday Night Market today, Mayor Andrew Coolidge will be speaking about the spirit of Chico and Chico State President Gayle Hutchinson will talk about the university’s part in Chico’s history.

Macarthy said the Downtown Chico Business Association will be improving upon Thursday Night Markets with booths from minority owned businesses and with artists that are out as part of the market.

“With Thursday Night Market, we wanted to be one of the best (markets) and to encourage people to get out there and celebrate our community and be a part of what our community really is,” Macarthy said.

The kickoff today will be complemented with a final celebration at Meriam Park.
